The Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens, commonly known as the Melbourne Zoo, contains more than 350 animal species from Australia and around the world.

It is Australia’s oldest and regarded by experts as one of the world’s best zoos covering 22 hectares (55 acres) of botanic-style gardens creating appropriate habitat zones and just 4km from the city centre.

Melbourne Zoo is an historic zoo with an innovative master plan that displays a representative sample of the world’s fauna and flora in a series of bioclimatic (or habitat) zones. Melbourne Zoo is clearly one of the world’s great zoos.

More than 350 animal species from Australia and around the world are on view just 4 km from the centre of Melbourne, in a botanic garden setting of 55 acres / 22 hectares.

Melbourne Zoo is Australia’s oldest: it opened on this site in 1862. Significant historic features such as the design of the Main Walk and an early 20th Century menagerie exhibit are preserved in an historic zone so visitors will be able to measure the great improvements which have been achieved.

Melbourne Zoo is located only minutes from the city centre, within Royal Park. Car parking is available or visitors can take the tram or train to reach the Zoo. Tram 55 from William Street Monday-Saturday and Tram 68 from Elizabeth Street run on Sundays. Trains run from historic Flinders Street Station on the Upfield or Gowrie lines Monday through Sunday, stopping at Melbourne Zoos own Royal Park Station.

How to get to the Zoo

Vehicles: There are carparks located off Elliot Ave, with appropriate parking spaces.

Tram: There are trams that run adjacent to the main gate and from the rear of the zoo, near the railway station. Tram 55 from William St, tram 68 from Elizabeth St and tram 19 from Elizabeth St along Royal Parade.

Bus: The daily City Explorer Tour bus calls at the Zoo every hour.

Train: Royal Park Station is located at the rear of the zoo. The trains run daily from the City on the Upfield line.

Opening Times

Melbourne Zoo is open every day of the year (including Christmas Day and all public holidays) 9.00am – 5.00pm, and on selected summer evenings we open late (to 9.30pm) for Zoo Twilights.
